Don't panic when you see the yellow light come on. First, pull over, turn off the engine, and wait for the engine temperature to drop before opening the hood. Wear gloves and slowly unscrew the auxiliary water tank cap. Use a long-handled funnel to add some distilled water or coolant, but never use tap water as it can cause scaling. After topping up, start the engine to see if the light goes off. If a red light comes on or the temperature gauge soars, shut off the engine immediately—it could be a stuck water pump or a faulty thermostat. Don't push it; call a tow truck to take it to the repair shop. If you absolutely must move the car at night, turn the heater to maximum fan speed to help dissipate heat, but stop every five minutes to cool down and check. It's essential to carry a bucket of coolant when going on long trips.

Check the coolant reservoir level when the engine is cold to see if it's low, and inspect the hoses for any signs of leakage. Start the engine and wait until the coolant temperature reaches the midpoint, then squeeze the upper hose—if it's hot to the touch, the circulation is normal. If the upper hose is hot but the lower one is cold, the thermostat might be stuck or the water pump may have failed. Rev the engine to 3000 RPM while stationary and observe if there are ripples in the radiator opening—no ripples indicate a water pump issue. Also, check if the cooling fan operates at both high and low speeds. Feel the engine bay floor for any sticky pink residue, which is evidence of a leak.
