What are the advantages and disadvantages of car static straps?

Static straps are devices used to eliminate static electricity from vehicles. Their primary purpose is to conduct static electricity, effectively discharging the static charge to the ground, thereby avoiding the troubles caused by static electricity. Car static straps not only remove static electricity but can also glow at night. This helps alert vehicles behind during nighttime driving, prompting them to maintain a safe distance to prevent hazardous accidents. The hazards of car static electricity: Although the current of static electricity is small, the voltage can reach as high as 10,000 to 100,000 volts, comparable to lightning. This poses a significant risk of accidents when refueling at gas stations. Static electricity accumulated in the human body can harm health, severely affecting metabolism, increasing blood sugar levels, causing skin diseases, and leading to autonomic nervous system disorders, reduced immunity, and susceptibility to illnesses like colds. While driving, an unexpected static shock can cause excessive fright, potentially leading to accidental traffic incidents. To prevent car static electricity, here are several methods: Eliminate static electricity from your body before driving. You can wash your hands or touch a wall to discharge static electricity. Use natural materials for car accessories and minimize synthetic fabrics. For example, placing genuine leather seat covers on seats reduces the likelihood of friction-induced static. Avoid wearing synthetic clothing and opt for cotton garments instead. Use a humidifier in the car or place a damp towel on the dashboard. This increases air humidity inside the car, making it less prone to static buildup. Use maintenance products. Many anti-static sprays are available on the market, which can be applied to door handles, dashboards, fabric covers, and other areas prone to static electricity.
I've been driving for over a decade and have deep experience with anti-static straps. In winter when wearing sweaters, I always got shocked getting in the car, but after installing one, the static issues really decreased. The biggest benefit is preventing that numb hand feeling when touching the car door, plus it helps reduce dust accumulation on the body, making car washes much easier. However, there are downsides: the metal chain dragging on the ground wears out easily, and I always worry about it getting scraped off when going over speed bumps; it also adds some wind resistance at highway speeds, potentially increasing fuel consumption by a few tenths. My recommendation is that it's worth installing in dry northern regions, but not really necessary in humid southern areas.
