In addition to checking the appropriate gasoline grade in the vehicle manual, you can also find it marked on the fuel tank cap of the Patrol Y62. Generally, the gasoline grade can also be determined based on the engine's compression ratio. Vehicles with an engine compression ratio between 8.6-9.9 should use 92 octane gasoline, while those with a compression ratio between 10.0-11.5 should use 95 octane gasoline. However, with the application of new technologies, the compression ratio alone cannot determine the gasoline grade. High compression ratio engines can also be tuned to use lower octane gasoline because, besides the compression ratio, other factors such as ignition timing, turbocharging technology, and Atkinson cycle technology also play a role. Generally, the higher the gasoline octane number, the higher the octane value and the better the anti-knock performance. 92 octane gasoline contains 92% isooctane and 8% n-heptane, while 95 octane gasoline contains 95% isooctane and 5% n-heptane. If the Patrol Y62 occasionally uses the wrong gasoline grade, simply switch back to the correct grade after consumption. However, long-term use of the wrong gasoline grade can have the following effects: For vehicles recommended to use lower octane gasoline, using higher octane gasoline will not cause damage, but the increase in octane value will change the fuel's ignition point, leading to delayed combustion in the engine. This means both the engine's power output and thermal efficiency will decrease, resulting in poorer performance. For vehicles recommended to use higher octane gasoline, using lower octane gasoline can cause engine knocking. Because the octane value is too low, the gasoline's ignition point decreases, causing premature ignition during the compression stroke. If the fuel ignites before the spark plug fires during the compression stroke, resistance will occur during the upward stroke. This resistance makes the engine run very unstable. If the knocking is mild, it may only increase noise without significant engine damage. However, if noticeable knocking occurs, it indicates severe engine conditions, affecting not only driving stability but also causing abnormal wear on pistons and cylinders, and in severe cases, cylinder scoring.

I've just researched the refueling issue with the Patrol Y62, and the manual clearly states: 92 octane or higher unleaded gasoline is acceptable. For daily city commuting, using 92 octane is completely fine—Nissan's VQ engine has clever anti-knock tuning. Of course, for long-distance trips or frequent hill climbing, 95 octane gasoline with its higher octane rating provides more stable power output during aggressive driving. The key is to avoid small gas stations, as their fuel often contains more impurities that can clog fuel injectors. Even branded 92 octane is better than off-brand 95. Also, remember to add a bottle of the original fuel additive every 5,000 kilometers—it's quite effective in preventing carbon buildup in direct-injection engines.

When I drove my Patrol into Tibet, I specifically tested fuel compatibility. In high-altitude areas with fewer gas stations, you take whatever is available, be it 92 or 95 octane. In desert conditions with sustained high engine RPM, higher-octane 95 fuel provides better anti-knock protection for pistons and connecting rods. The money saved by using 92 octane for daily commutes could buy two sets of air filters. The VK56VD engine's dual injection system can technically run on lower-grade fuel, but the fuel cap warning states: Using below 92 octane may trigger knock sensor alerts. Note: Vehicles with ECU remaps require 98 octane, while stock-tuned engines don't. Some Tibetan counties only offer 92 octane - tested personally with full tanks covering 800km without issues.

From the perspective of costs: The Nissan Patrol Y62 has a 98-liter fuel tank, and filling it with 92-octane instead of 95-octane saves 40 RMB. However, there are three refueling details to note for this vehicle: the fuel filler is on the left side, so remember the correct direction; in northern winters, using 92-octane requires adding antifreeze; for models after the 2014 version with direct fuel injection, it's best to add a cleaner every three tanks of fuel. Recommended practice: Use 92-octane as per the manual during the first three years of warranty, then switch to 95-octane after the warranty expires. Tests on a 70,000-kilometer vehicle showed that using 95-octane reduces valve carbon deposits by one-third compared to 92-octane, with more stable idling. Regular throttle cleaning can maintain fuel consumption at around 14 liters per 100 km.
