
The Scirocco R is not a four-wheel drive; this model is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive vehicle. Introduction to Four-Wheel Drive: Four-wheel drive refers to a vehicle maintaining a four-wheel-drive configuration throughout the entire driving process, with the engine's output torque distributed to the front and rear wheels at a fixed ratio. This drive mode ensures excellent off-road and handling performance at all times, but it cannot adjust torque distribution based on road conditions and has higher fuel consumption. Types of Four-Wheel Drive: Part-time four-wheel drive is a system where the driver can manually switch between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. By engaging or disengaging the transfer case, the driver can achieve either two-wheel or four-wheel drive as needed. This is the most common four-wheel-drive system found in off-road vehicles or SUVs with four-wheel-drive capabilities. Full-time four-wheel drive means all wheels are independently powered at all times while driving. Full-time four-wheel-drive vehicles have superior driving fundamentals compared to two-wheel-drive vehicles: better power, traction, enhanced driving experience, increased safety during aggressive driving, and greater stability. Therefore, this system is typically equipped in high-end SUVs, such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GL.

I drove the Scirocco for several years, and this car has quite an interesting setup. The regular versions like the 1.4T and 2.0T are standard front-wheel drive, and did a great job tuning the FWD—understeer isn't very noticeable when cornering. However, if you're talking about the all-wheel-drive version, that would be the Scirocco R with the 'R' badge, which comes with the 4MOTION AWD system. This AWD version was mainly produced between 2010 and 2017. The addition of the AWD system makes the R version particularly stable in rainy and snowy conditions, with virtually no wheel spin during acceleration. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible for owners of the regular versions to upgrade to AWD, as the drivetrain structure is completely different. Nowadays, if you're looking for a Scirocco R in the used car market, the key identifying feature is the center-exit exhaust design—the regular versions all have dual exhausts on each side.

In the tuning scene, I often get asked whether the Scirocco can be converted to AWD. Honestly, only the Scirocco R comes with the transverse-platform 4MOTION system from the factory, which distributes power via an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, allowing the rear axle to receive up to 50% of the torque. The regular version is a standard front-wheel-drive layout, with no space reserved for a driveshaft in the transmission area. If you really want to force an AWD conversion, you'd have to cut the firewall and replace the entire powertrain mounts—costing almost half the price of the car. In reality, the front-wheel-drive Scirocco GTS version with an LSD (limited-slip differential) already performs close to the AWD R version on the track, at a much lower cost. For daily driving, a good set of tires is far more practical than chasing AWD.

While researching the lineup, I noticed an interesting phenomenon: the Scirocco, as a sports coupe, predominantly uses front-wheel drive in most models. Later, through interviews with engineers, I understood that this was to balance weight and handling agility. The standard version weighs only 1.3 tons, and adding an all-wheel-drive system would increase the weight by over 100 kilograms. It wasn't until the introduction of the 300-horsepower R version that engineers deemed it necessary to use all-wheel drive to harness the powerful performance. However, the all-wheel-drive system increased the chassis ground clearance by 15mm, making the cornering body roll more noticeable compared to the lower center of gravity in the standard version. Therefore, not all cars become better to drive with all-wheel drive—it depends on the specific design goals.

The Scirocco R's all-wheel-drive system is exceptionally intelligent. During normal driving, it feels more like a front-wheel-drive setup for fuel efficiency, but automatically activates power to the rear wheels when the steering angle exceeds 15 degrees. Once during heavy rain on the highway, I could distinctly feel the rear wheels pushing outward during lane changes, avoiding the tail-happy behavior typical of front-wheel-drive cars. This AWD system has an interesting easter egg: in Sport mode with hard acceleration, it sends 70% power to the rear wheels, making it drive almost like a rear-wheel-drive car. However, note that its AWD system consumes about 2L more fuel than the standard version, and used models currently command a premium of 70,000-80,000 yuan. When used, always check for abnormal noises from the driveshaft - repair costs can be terrifying.

Drove the entire Scirocco lineup in Germany, including the rare R400 concept. The 4WD version proved most practical when tackling the Alps in winter—sections where regular cars needed snow chains, the Scirocco R breezed through with all-season tires. Its 4WD torque distribution is lightning-fast, instantly sending power to wheels with grip when accelerating on snow. But southern owners needn't insist on 4WD—the price premium could cover five years' fuel. Interestingly, the base model with coilover upgrades outcorners the taller 4WD version on mountain roads, making the lighter FWD a smarter choice for track days.
