It is necessary to use semi-slick tires for motorcycles. The following are the specific reasons and functions: Main reasons are as follows: Low cost: Because the cost of full-slick tires is too expensive, semi-slick tires are more cost-effective. Functions: When manufacturing tires, manufacturers add chemical materials such as Kevlar fibers, which enhances the hardness of the tire sidewalls while reducing weight. Semi-slick tires operate at much lower temperatures than full-slick tires but still retain some heat-melting characteristics. Additionally, through the design of tread patterns and drainage grooves, they can achieve grip close to that of full-slick tires, while also offering excellent drainage performance and very high cost-effectiveness.
I've been riding motorcycles for over a decade, mainly on race tracks, and semi-slick tires are my top choice—that extreme grip when cornering feels amazing, especially in dry conditions where it allows pushing cornering speeds to the limit, with performance off the charts. However, their drawbacks can't be ignored: grip drops significantly in the rain, making them prone to slipping, and they wear out extremely fast, often needing replacement after just 3,000 kilometers. For everyday street riding, they're completely unnecessary and can even increase risks. They're only suitable for professional training or racing enthusiasts, and proper safety measures must be in place—don't recklessly use them for ordinary riding. Standard road tires are more than sufficient, offering much better value for money and saving you a lot that can be spent on other maintenance tasks.
