How to use an automatic transmission car: First, press the brake pedal, then start the engine. Shift into D gear to move forward. P gear is used when parking and turning off the engine, N gear is for short stops without turning off the engine, R gear is for reverse, and S gear is for sport mode. Some automatic transmissions also have M gear and L gear. M gear is the manual mode of the automatic transmission, while L gear is the low-speed gear of the automatic transmission. The manual mode of an automatic transmission is different from a manual transmission. In the manual mode of an automatic transmission, the driver can only upshift or downshift, whereas a manual transmission allows the driver to directly select any gear.

As a veteran driver with over a decade of automatic transmission experience, here are some tips. After getting in, pressing the brake, and starting the engine, shift directly from P to D and go. Don't coast in neutral on the road—it really damages the transmission. For red lights over 30 seconds, I shift to N and engage the handbrake to let the transmission fluid cool. When overtaking, just floor the accelerator for an instant downshift and speed boost—much quicker than manual transmission. Remember the parking sequence: after braking to a full stop, first shift to N and apply the handbrake, release the foot brake to let the car settle, then finally shift to P and turn off the engine. This is especially crucial when parking on slopes to prevent transmission gear jamming.

I remember when my dad taught me to drive an automatic, he kept emphasizing four letters: P is for Park to lock the wheels, R for Reverse (always brake when shifting), N for Neutral at red lights, and D for Drive, the most commonly used. I've noticed many cars now also have L for Low gear when climbing hills and S for Sport mode to overtake more aggressively. Before starting, make sure the gear lever is firmly in the D slot—don't leave it between gears to avoid damaging the transmission. Once, I didn't shift properly, and the car just whined without moving—scared me to death.

When I first switched to an automatic transmission, it felt really unfamiliar. Later, I figured it out. After starting the car, you need to press the brake to shift out of P gear. It's normal for the car to jerk when shifting on a slope. When parking in reverse, make sure to come to a complete stop before switching between R and D gears, otherwise, the transmission will make a clunking sound that's heartbreaking to hear. On rainy days, press the snowflake button next to the gear lever to light it up, and the car will start without slipping, very stable.
