How to Solve the Steering Wheel Noise Issue in the X-Trail?

Friction between plastic components may cause steering wheel noise. It usually resolves after a break-in period. If the noise persists after break-in, try reinstalling the steering wheel. The front end of the steering column has a universal joint. Check if the floor mat is in contact with the steering column. If there is contact, simply adjust the position of the floor mat.
I also encountered a steering wheel noise issue last time I drove my X-Trail. That clunking sound was really annoying. At first, I tried to figure it out myself for a long time, but later discovered it was caused by a lack of lubrication in the steering column universal joint. If the noise is particularly noticeable when turning, you can try fixing it yourself first: crawl under and locate the steering column connection point, then buy a can of WD-40 or grease and spray it on the universal joint area—it's actually quite simple to do. If the noise persists after spraying, it might be due to a loose tie rod end in the steering gear, which you can't fix yourself. Honestly, it's best not to delay with such issues. I ended up going to the 4S shop for a check-up, spending over 300 yuan to replace the entire steering column dust cover before the problem was completely resolved. Now, the steering is whisper-quiet. Remember to clean the mud and sand around the steering gear during regular car washes to prevent noise.
