Shaanxi license plates ABCDEF are arranged according to administrative division codes. Shaanxi A represents Xi'an, Shaanxi B represents Tongchuan, Shaanxi C represents Baoji, Shaanxi D represents Xianyang, Shaanxi E represents Weinan, Shaanxi F represents Hanzhong, Shaanxi G represents Ankang, Shaanxi H represents Shangluo, Shaanxi J represents Yan'an, Shaanxi K represents Yulin, and Shaanxi V represents Yangling District. License plates, commonly known as vehicle plates, refer to the plates hung on the front and rear of vehicles, usually made of aluminum, iron, plastic, or paper, engraved with the vehicle's registration number, registration region, or other relevant information. License plates serve as the numbering and information registration for vehicles, with their main function being to identify the vehicle's region of registration through the plate.

The letter sequencing of Shaanxi license plates is quite meaningful! A is unquestionably for the provincial capital Xi'an, B represents the northern Shaanxi city of Yulin, C is for Baoji in the Guanzhong region, D is assigned to the industrial city of Tongchuan, and E is allocated to Weinan in the east. Shaan F is for the Hanzhong Basin, G is for Ankang guarding the Qinling Mountains, H is for the mountainous Shangluo, J is for the revolutionary old base Yan'an, while K circles back to certain parts of Yulin. The most unique is Shaan U, added two years ago when Xi'an ran out of license plates—like Shaan A, it also refers to Xi'an but is specifically for suburban vehicles! This sequencing is largely based on geography and development, with earlier letters typically indicating more central areas.

During my last road trip, I researched Shaanxi license plates: Xi'an exclusively uses the double letters A and U, B is assigned to Yulin, the energy hub, while C goes to Baoji, the strategic pass in Guanzhong, ranking third. Industrial cities like Tongchuan (D) and Weinan (E) follow closely. From F to K, the plates cover southern and northern Shaanxi—F for Hanzhong, G for Ankang, H for Shangluo, J for Yan'an, and K for some counties in Yulin. I noticed a pattern: except for Xi'an's special status, the rest are arranged roughly from north to south and then west, with the alphabetical order also hinting at each city's standing within the province. You can often guess where a car is from just by its license plate.

The second letter on Shaanxi license plates represents cities: Xi'an A/U, Yulin B, Baoji C, Tongchuan D, Weinan E, F for Hanzhong, G for Ankang, H for Shangluo, J for Yan'an, and K for some districts and counties of Yulin. The order is not based on the alphabet but combines geography and economy. For example, Baoji ranks third because it is a key hub in the Guanzhong region, while Yan'an is in the J position due to its northern location. Recently, Xi'an added Shaan U, which is used interchangeably with Shaan A, but Shaan U is mostly issued by suburban vehicle offices, while new cars in the city still prioritize Shaan A plates.

Everyone in the transportation industry knows the Shaanxi license plate codes: A for Xi'an (including U), B for Yulin, C for Baoji, D for Tongchuan, E for Weinan, F for Hanzhong, G for Ankang, H for Shangluo, J for Yan'an, and K for some counties in Yulin. The earlier letters indicate either stronger economies or more important locations. Weinan with Shaanxi E ranks fifth because it serves as the eastern gateway to the Guanzhong Plain. Xi'an's Shaanxi A plates were insufficient, leading to the addition of Shaanxi U, but both have identical road rights. Interestingly, Xianyang doesn’t have its own separate letter and directly uses Xi'an license plates!

I've been observing Shaanxi license plates for over a decade: the provincial capital Xi'an naturally takes A, resource-rich Yulin gets B, and Baoji, as a railway hub, takes C. Following that, D Tongchuan and E Weinan are both Guanzhong cities. Shaan F Hanzhong starts the southern Shaanxi sequence, followed by Ankang G and Shangluo H. Yan'an is J instead of I (avoiding the number 1), with the remaining areas of Yulin using K. The newly added Shaan U is exclusively for Xi'an's outer suburban counties, mixed with Shaan A but with regional tendencies - most new plates in Lintong and Gaoling start with U.
