How to Repair Scratches on Wheel Rims?

Check the scratch. If it hasn't reached the inner side of the hub, it can be easily repaired. Use paint thinner to wipe around the scratch to remove dirt. The deepest part of the scratch is difficult to clean. In this case, use a toothpick to thoroughly clean it. It's best to carefully apply adhesive tape around the scratch. Trim the brush tip and apply touch-up paint. After the paint dries, it will shrink slightly, so it's better to apply it slightly raised. After painting, it will take about a week to dry completely. Once dry, use waterproof paper dipped in soapy water to smooth the surface. After wiping with waterproof paper, use a compound to polish it to a shine and apply wax.
With over 20 years of car repair experience, I've seen many scratched rims that can actually be fixed DIY. First, use fine sandpaper to smooth the area around the scratch. If the depth exceeds 2mm, fill it with metal putty. After drying, gradually sand with 600 to 2000 grit sandpaper, then spray with rim-specific paint and bake dry. Remember to thoroughly clean the rim before starting, or adhesion will be problematic. Post-repair, a wheel balance is advisable to prevent steering wheel vibration at high speeds. If the spokes are deformed or cracked, don't force a repair—replace the rim for safety. Daily parking should avoid curbs to prevent scratching alloy rims.
