How to Remove the Steering Wheel?

The steps to remove the steering wheel are: 1. Disconnect the battery and turn the steering wheel 90 degrees; 2. Use a flat-head screwdriver to insert from front to back into the hole behind the steering wheel; 3. Insert the screwdriver head between the retaining spring and the airbag hook, adjust the retaining spring strip away from the hook, and the airbag side will automatically pop out toward the seat direction; 4. Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees, remove the airbag and unclip the yellow safety buckle behind the airbag, then pull out the airbag connector to remove the airbag; 5. Pull out the connector of the airbag coupling coil above the inside of the steering wheel, and use an M12 spline to loosen the central fixing bolt of the steering wheel counterclockwise; 6. Remove the steering wheel to complete the process.
I often remove the steering wheel—as a mechanic with years of experience, strict procedures are essential to prevent accidents. Safety comes first: turn off the engine, disconnect the negative battery terminal, and wait at least 10 minutes for the capacitors to discharge completely. Otherwise, accidental airbag deployment could be disastrous. For tools, a steering wheel puller kit costs around 30-50 yuan—don’t skimp to avoid damaging the steering column by prying. During the process, remove the center cover to expose the center nut (usually 24 or 27mm), loosen it with a wrench, then use the puller to apply even force for removal. Marking the position or taking photos of the current alignment is crucial; otherwise, reinstallation may cause significant steering deviation affecting handling. Be careful not to yank and break the wires for the horn or multifunction buttons. After removal, inspect the steering column for damage. With experience, it takes about half an hour, but cultivating meticulous habits avoids rework. Beginners should practice on scrap cars a few times before working on actual vehicles for safety.
