For me, it came down to my garage. I could run a 240-volt outlet for a Level 2 charger. That made the EV a no-brainer. My commute is 30 miles round trip, so I rarely think about charging. I just plug in at night like my phone. If I couldn't charge at home, I’d have gone with a hybrid in a heartbeat. The convenience of just filling up at any gas station is a huge plus for a lot of people.

Think about where you live. If you're in an apartment with no charging, an EV is tough. But if you have a house, look at your driving. A plug-in hybrid is a great middle ground. You can do your daily school run and grocery trips on electric power, saving gas. Then, for that weekend trip to the mountains, the gas engine kicks in with no worries. It’s the best of both worlds without the range anxiety of a full EV.

Don't just focus on the sticker price. You have to consider the total cost of ownership. My EV's "fuel" cost is about a third of what I used to pay for gas, and maintenance is basically just tires and washer fluid. There's a federal tax credit that helped with the upfront cost. A hybrid will save you money on gas compared to a regular car, but you'll still have all the standard engine maintenance. Run the numbers for your situation.

My decision was environmental. I wanted to eliminate my tailpipe emissions completely. The EV does that. Even accounting for how my local electricity is generated, it's much cleaner than any gasoline car, including a hybrid. A hybrid is a step in the right direction, but it still burns gas. If your goal is to minimize your carbon footprint and you have the infrastructure to support it, a pure electric is the way to go.
