The primary reason for discharge when the car is off is parasitic drain. This is a small, constant draw of power to maintain memory for settings like your radio presets, clock, and the vehicle's computer modules. Real-world discharge is much faster due to other factors. Extreme cold thickens engine oil and reduces the battery's chemical capacity, demanding more power to start while having less available.
