How often should coolant be added to a new car's engine?

New car engine coolant should be added once a year, and replaced after more than two years. Regular checks should be done, and if the level is below the minimum mark, antifreeze should be added promptly. Coolant, fully known as antifreeze coolant, refers to a coolant with antifreeze properties. It prevents the coolant from freezing during cold seasons when the car is parked, which could otherwise cause the radiator to crack or damage the engine cylinder block. Coolant consists of three components: water, antifreeze, and additives. Depending on the antifreeze component, it can be classified into types such as alcohol-based, glycerol-based, and ethylene glycol-based. The cooling system includes components like the radiator, water pump, cylinder block, cylinder head, and water distribution pipe, made of metals such as steel, cast iron, brass, copper, aluminum, and solder. Due to the different electrode potentials of these metals, electrochemical corrosion can easily occur under the influence of electrolytes.
As a new car owner, I've learned that adding engine coolant depends on the situation. New cars come with well-sealed systems, so generally, you don't need to top up the coolant for the first year or two unless you notice leaks or a significant drop in fluid level. I've made it a habit to quickly check the coolant reservoir every time I wash my car—keeping the fluid level between the MIN and MAX marks is safe. Under normal operation, coolant evaporation is minimal, but there's slight long-term loss, so it's advisable to check every six months or so. If the level drops below MIN, add a proper 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water—avoid using pure water to prevent rust. Neglecting this could lead to engine overheating or even a blown head gasket, resulting in costly repairs. While new cars are low-maintenance, regular upkeep extends their lifespan and ensures peace of mind while driving. During each service, the technician will confirm if a top-up or replacement is needed, and I trust the manual's guidelines.
