
Modern cars don’t need to idle long—30 to 60 seconds is sufficient for oil to circulate. Then, drive slowly to allow the engine to reach optimal temperature more efficiently than idling. Older cars might need a bit longer warm-up time. Prolonged idling should be avoided because it burns extra fuel and stresses engine parts. In freezing conditions, a block heater can speed up warm-up.
