The most critical and immediate symptom is the illumination of the oil pressure warning light on your dashboard. This symbol, resembling an oil can, signifies that oil pressure has dropped below a safe threshold. Low oil level is a common cause, as the oil pump cannot circulate an adequate volume to maintain proper pressure. This light demands immediate attention—driving for even a short distance can cause irreversible damage.
Unusual engine noises are a major red flag. A healthy, well-lubricated engine runs relatively quietly. With low oil, components like the crankshaft bearings, camshaft, and piston rings grind against each other without proper lubrication. A level at or below the "MIN" mark confirms the issue. Visually inspect the ground under the engine for fresh oil leaks. Top up with the correct grade of oil to the "MAX" line, but consider this a temporary measure to get to a mechanic for a full inspection to find the root cause of the oil loss.
