A broken exhaust pipe does increase fuel consumption, and here are the reasons: 1. A damaged exhaust pipe reduces exhaust resistance, allowing smoother exhaust flow, which in turn creates more space for air intake. This increased air intake leads to higher fuel supply. 2. Considering the engine's four-stroke cycle—intake, compression, power, and exhaust—if the exhaust pipe cannot quickly expel the burned gases, the subsequent intake stroke will also be unable to rapidly and fully draw in fresh air. Moreover, the residual exhaust gases in the combustion chamber will negatively impact the next combustion cycle, thereby increasing fuel consumption.
