Can the Audi S gear be used frequently?

S gear is the sports mode and should not be used for extended periods. Occasionally switching to sports mode can help protect the transmission mechanics. Prolonged use may cause wear and tear on the transmission, affecting the vehicle's power delivery. The most suitable gear for long-term use in automatic transmission vehicles is the D gear, which offers stronger power and smoother driving. Audi's S gear is the vehicle's sports mode ("S" stands for "Sport"). In S gear sports mode, the transmission can shift freely, but the shift timing is delayed, keeping the engine at higher RPMs for a longer duration. This allows the car to operate at lower gears with higher RPMs for extended periods, resulting in greater torque output and acceleration. While driving, simply push the gear lever into the "S" position, which is typically used for climbing hills or quick overtaking. It is perfectly fine to start the car directly in S gear after stopping. If the vehicle is in D gear while driving, you can switch to S gear without releasing the throttle or pressing the brake. To shift from D gear to S gear, press the lock button on the gear lever. However, shifting back from S gear to D gear can be done directly without pressing the lock button.
