I drive my Smart Fortwo on the freeway every day for my commute. Sure, you feel the bumps a bit more, and you gotta be smart about merging—you can’t just punch it. But it’s totally fine. My main concern is safety. I checked the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) data before buying one. Smart cars have a good safety record for their size because of their strong passenger cage. That said, physics is physics. In a collision with a much larger vehicle, the size difference is a disadvantage. For me, using it on the freeway is acceptable for short, necessary trips in good weather, but I’d choose our SUV for a long family road trip every time.
