I'd be really nervous trying it in my sedan. It's front-wheel drive and has the standard all-season tires it came with. I got stuck once in just three inches of heavy snow because the car just slid sideways when I tried to go up a slight incline. Five inches? That's enough to pile up under the car. I'd only attempt it if it was absolutely necessary and the roads were flat, but I'd probably just wait for the plow.

In my truck with 4WD engaged, 5 inches of fresh powder is usually fine. The key is having the right tires—I switch to dedicated snow tires every winter. They make a world of difference for braking and control. That said, if that 5 inches is wet, slushy snow that's been packed down by other cars, it becomes slick and tricky. The biggest issue isn't starting, it's stopping. A lot of people think AWD is a magic bullet, but it only helps you accelerate. Everyone has the same four-wheel brakes.
