Ah, the sofa bed, the unsung hero of tiny apartments and the savior of hosts everywhere. If you've ever wondered who to thank for this magnificent piece of domestic , turn your applause to an Italian immigrant named Bernard Castro. He is widely credited with inventing the modern, commercially successful sofa bed back in 1931.
While there were earlier patents for things like "folding beds" and other contraptions at the turn of the 20th century, Castro was the one who truly cracked the code. His genius was creating a sofa that didn’t scream, "I have a metal skeleton and a thin mattress crammed inside me!" His Castro convertible was a master of disguise, looking and feeling like a stylish piece of fine furniture.
Unlike its predecessors, it cleverly housed a full-sized mattress within its frame, all without having to find a new home for a mountain of loose cushions. So, while others dabbled, it was Bernard Castro who perfected the living room transformer, forever solving the dilemma of where to put unexpected guests.
