The dollar coin issued in 1976 features a portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower on its obverse, or front side. These coins are commonly known as Eisenhower dollars.

The 1976 coin was a special Bicentennial issue, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the United States. As such, it is dual-dated "1776-1976". For this Bicentennial design, the reverse of the coin was specially created by Dennis R. Williams and features an image of the Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon.

While often referred to as "silver dollars," the versions minted for general circulation were made of a copper-nickel clad composition. However, special uncirculated and proof versions for collectors were produced with a 40% silver-clad composition.
