Hello there! That's a great question, as finding the mint mark is a key part of discovering a silver dollar's history. The exact location depends on which type of silver dollar you're looking at, as the placement changed over the years.
For the two most common types, the Morgan and the Peace silver dollar, you will always find the mint mark on the reverse, or "tails," side of the coin.
If you have a Morgan Silver Dollar, which was minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, flip it over to the side with the eagle. You'll find the mint mark, a small letter, just below the wreath that encircles the eagle.
For the Peace Silver Dollar, minted from 1921 to 1935, the mint mark is also on the reverse. Look to the lower left of the eagle, just below the word "ONE" in the "ONE DOLLAR" inscription.
Common mint marks include "S" for San Francisco, "O" for New Orleans, "CC" for the famous Carson City mint, and "D" for Denver. If your coin doesn't have a mint mark in that spot, it was most likely minted in Philadelphia. Happy hunting
