Based on an analysis of valuable U.S. coinage, the silver dollars commanding the highest values belong to eight distinct historical designs. The of any specific coin depends on its type, rarity, and condition, but these series are known to contain the most sought-after specimens by collectors.
The earliest and often most valuable series include the Flowing Hair dollar, minted from 1794 to 1795, and the Draped Bust dollar, produced from 1795 to 1803. Following these is the notable 1804 Dollar, a rare and famous coin that was actually struck in later years, from 1834 until 1869, for diplomatic purposes. Other significant nineteenth-century designs include the Seated Liberty dollar (1840-1873) and the Trade dollar (1873-1885).
In the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Morgan dollar (1878-1904 and 1921) and the Peace dollar (1921-1928 and 1934-1935) represent two of the most widely collected series, with certain key dates and mint marks being exceptionally valuable. Finally, while more modern, some Eisenhower dollars, specifically those minted with 40% silver content from 1971 to 1976, can also be valuable. Within each of these eight designs, specific issues are prized for their scarcity and historical significance.
