Discovering a truly valuable silver dollar is the dream of every collector, and a few specific issues can turn that dream into a reality. While many of these historic coins, minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, are highly sought after, a select group of key dates and mint marks are exceptionally valuable due to their rarity and condition.
The undisputed king of the series is the 1893-S Morgan Dollar, a legendary rarity with values that can range from $3,000 to an astonishing $1,250,000. An exceptional specimen of this coin once sold for over $2 million, setting the record for the series. Other major rarities that can command prices into the hundreds of thousands or even over a million dollars include the 1889-CC and the 1884-S, the latter of which can be worth a modest amount in circulated condition but skyrockets in value for pristine examples.
The year 1895 is also a landmark for collectors. The Philadelphia-minted 1895, known as a proof-only issue, can be worth anywhere from $32,500 to $175,000. The 1895-O and 1895-S are also incredibly valuable, with potential values stretching up to $700,000. Other key dates you should always look for include the 1894, the 1903-S, and several issues from the famous Carson City mint, such as the 1893-CC, 1885-CC, and the 1879-CC. Finding any of these specific coins, especially in high-grade condition, could mean you have a true numismatic treasure in your hands.
