The service factor of a motor is a multiplier that defines its capacity for short-term overload. A motor rated with a 1.15 service factor can safely run at 115% of its nominal horsepower for limited periods. This margin protects against startup stress or temporary load surges, though running continuously above rated power can damage the motor over time.
