A motor’s service factor indicates how much extra load it can handle temporarily without harm. For example, a motor with a 1.15 service factor can operate at 115% of its rated horsepower for short periods. This allows for brief overloads during startup or sudden demand spikes, but prolonged operation above the rated capacity can shorten the motor’s life.
