A small bottle of liquor is most formally and widely known as a miniature. These are small bottles containing a spirit, liqueur, or other alcoholic beverage, commonly found in hotel minibars or served on airplanes. The standard volume for a miniature is typically 50 ml, which is equivalent to approximately 1.7 US fluid ounces and constitutes a single serving or shot.
While "miniature" is the standard term, several other names are used, often depending on the region. The term "nip" is a common synonym, particularly in New England and other parts of the East Coast of the United States. Other colloquial names you might encounter include "airplane bottle," referencing one of their most common points of sale, as well as "shooter" or "one-shot," which allude to the single-serving nature of the bottle's contents.
