The proper cleaning of foam couch cushions requires a careful, manual approach, as mechanical washing methods can compromise the structural integrity of the foam. It is inadvisable to place foam inserts into a washing machine, as the agitation can cause the material to tear apart or disintegrate. The recommended procedure is hand-washing in a large basin, such as a bathtub.
To begin, fill the tub with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild laundry detergent. Submerge the foam cushion completely and gently squeeze it repeatedly to work the soapy water through its porous structure. This action helps to dislodge dirt and treat stains throughout the insert. After a thorough but gentle washing, the foam must be rinsed completely to remove all detergent residue, which could otherwise attract dirt or damage the foam over time. This is accomplished by draining the soapy water, refilling the tub with clean water, and continuing to squeeze the cushion until no more suds are released.
The most critical phase of the process is drying. Trapped moisture can lead to the development of mold and mildew, so the foam must be dried completely. First, press out as much excess water as possible by hand. For a more effective extraction, place the foam cushion between two large, dry towels and apply pressure by rolling it or carefully standing on it. This will force a significant amount of water out. Following this initial water removal, the foam must be air-dried in a well-ventilated area for an extended period, which could take several days. Propping the cushion on its side and using a fan to circulate air around it can significantly expedite the drying time. The foam should not be returned to its cover until it is entirely dry to the touch, both on the surface and deep within the cushion.
