In New York City, the disposal of a sofa is handled through the free curbside removal service for bulk items provided to residential buildings. A sofa qualifies as a bulk item, which is defined as an object too large to fit into a standard trash bin or bag.
According to municipal regulations, residents can place up to six bulk items out for a single collection day. To discard a sofa, it should be placed curbside between 6:00 PM and midnight on the evening before the designated bulk trash, or "large item," collection day. As a non-recyclable item, the sofa should be disposed of in accordance with the schedule for bulk trash, not recycling.
