Don't give up on your favorite sofa just because of a cat urine accident. It’s a notoriously tough smell to beat, especially when it soaks into absorbent couch fabric, but you can absolutely eliminate it for good with the right plan of action. The key isn't to just cover up the smell, but to destroy it at its source.
First, you must act as quickly as possible. The longer the urine sits, the deeper it penetrates the cushions and fibers. Start by blotting the wet area with clean paper towels or a cloth. Press firmly to absorb as much of the liquid as you can, but avoid rubbing, which can spread the urine and push it deeper into the couch.
Once you’ve blotted the area, the most critical step is to use an enzymatic cleaner. Standard soaps and vinegar solutions might temporarily help, but they often fail to break down the uric acid crystals in cat urine, which is what causes the smell to return, especially on humid days. An enzymatic cleaner releases active enzymes that chemically break down and neutralize the uric acid and other compounds, completely removing the odor instead of just masking it. Be generous with the cleaner, making sure to fully saturate the area so it can reach everywhere the urine did.
After letting the cleaner sit according to the product's instructions, giving the enzymes time to work their magic, blot the excess moisture away with a fresh, clean cloth. Allow the spot to air dry completely, which may take some time. You can use a fan to help speed up the process. By following this method, you can effectively destroy the odor, reclaim your couch, and discourage your cat from re-marking the same spot.
