Based on established principles, successfully placing a rug under an L-shaped sofa, also known as a sectional, is crucial for defining the seating area and creating a cohesive look. The main objective is to use the rug to anchor the large piece of furniture and unify the surrounding space.
The most common and highly recommended method is to place the rug so that at least the front legs of the entire sectional are on it. This means the rug should slide under the front of both sections of the "L" by at least six to eight inches. This approach effectively grounds the furniture and connects the seating area without requiring a massive, room-sized rug, making it a practical choice for most living spaces.
For a more expansive and luxurious feel, particularly in a large room, you can opt to place the entire sectional sofa on the rug. To do this correctly, the rug must be large enough to extend beyond all sides of the sofa by at least 12 inches. This creates a clearly defined, generous, and unified seating zone that feels intentional and well-designed.
A final option involves using a smaller rug that sits in the open space within the "L" of the sectional, typically with a coffee table placed on top. In this layout, none of the sofa legs touch the rug. While this can add a pop of color and texture, it is generally considered less effective because it fails to visually anchor the large sofa to the rest of the room. Whichever placement you choose, it's important that the rug extends beyond the ends of the sectional on either side, rather than being perfectly flush with them.
