Properly placing a rug under a couch is crucial for anchoring the furniture and defining the living space. There are three primary professional methods to consider, each suited for different room sizes and desired effects.
The first approach involves placing all legs of the sofa and any accompanying furniture, such as armchairs and side tables, completely on the rug. This method creates a unified and cohesive look, making it an excellent choice for defining a seating area within a large or open-concept space. It requires a generously sized rug to accommodate all the furniture pieces comfortably.
A second, and very popular, technique is to place only the front legs of the sofa and chairs onto the rug. The back legs of the furniture remain off the rug and on the main flooring. This arrangement effectively connects and grounds the furniture pieces, creating a sense of cohesion without the need for an oversized rug. It is a well-balanced option that works in most living room layouts.
The third option is to have no legs of the sofa on the rug at all. In this layout, the rug is placed in front of the sofa, often with just a coffee table sitting on top of it. This can be an effective solution for smaller rooms or when using a smaller accent rug. For this method to work visually, the rug should be positioned close to the front of the sofa to prevent it from looking disconnected or like it is floating in the middle of the room.
