To make wood softer and easier to carve, the most effective methods involve hydrating the wood fibers. A common and straightforward technique used by many carvers is to apply a mixture of alcohol and water. This solution can be kept in a small spray bottle and applied directly to the specific section of the wood you are working on. This targeted approach allows you to soften the wood as needed without over-saturating the entire piece.
Other methods to achieve a similar result include soaking the wood in water or applying various oils that are also used for finishing. These techniques also work by introducing moisture into the wood, making it less resistant to carving tools.
Alternatively, you can choose to work with freshly cut wood, often referred to as "green wood." This type of wood is naturally soft and easy to carve due to its high moisture content, eliminating the need for any additional softening treatments.
