Removing chewing gum from a velvet sofa requires a careful approach to avoid damaging the delicate fabric pile. The most common and effective method is to freeze the gum, which hardens it and makes it easier to remove without aggressive scrubbing.
First, place several ice cubes in a plastic bag and hold the bag directly on top of the chewing gum. The goal is to make the gum as hard and brittle as possible without getting the velvet wet. This process may take several minutes. Once the gum is completely frozen solid, you can begin to gently pry it off the fabric. Use a dull, flat-edged tool like a spoon, a butter knife, or a card to carefully chip away at the frozen gum. Work slowly and lift the pieces away from the sofa, being cautious not to pull or damage the velvet fibers.
If any small, sticky residue remains after removing the bulk of the gum, you will need to treat the spot. It is crucial to test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of the sofa first to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration or damage. You can try dabbing the residue with a clean white cloth lightly dampened with a solvent like rubbing alcohol or white vinegar. Use a blotting motion rather than rubbing, which can crush the velvet's pile. After treating the spot, gently blot the area with a clean cloth dampened with water to rinse, and then blot it dry with a fresh, dry cloth.
Once the area is completely dry, you can use a soft-bristled brush to gently brush the velvet pile in its natural direction. This will help restore the fabric's original texture and appearance.
