The removal of candle wax from a suede sofa requires a methodical approach that prioritizes the preservation of the material's delicate nap. The initial step should focus on mechanical removal once the wax has completely hardened. To facilitate this, one can apply an ice cube to the wax, which will make it more brittle. Once fully hardened, the bulk of the wax can be gently scraped or flaked off using a dull edge, such as a spoon or a plastic card, being careful not to abrade the suede surface.
For wax that has permeated the suede fibers, a thermal absorption technique is recommended. This involves placing an absorbent, plain material like a brown paper bag or a paper towel directly over the stain. A warm iron on a low, steam-free setting, or a hairdryer, can then be applied to the paper. The gentle heat will melt the wax, which will then be drawn out of the suede and absorbed by the paper. This process should be done in short intervals, using a clean section of the paper each time, until wax is no longer being transferred. It is critical to use minimal heat and avoid direct contact between the heat source and the suede to prevent damage.
After the wax has been extracted, the final stage involves restoring the suede's texture. A suede eraser may be used to gently rub away any remaining surface residue or slight discoloration. Following this, a suede brush should be used to lift the nap and return the material to its original appearance. For any persistent oily stains, a proprietary suede cleaner may be necessary, but it should be tested on an inconspicuous area of the sofa first to ensure it does not cause discoloration.
