To effectively clean sofa cushions, it is essential to first identify the type of fabric and the appropriate cleaning method. The initial and most crucial step is to locate the care tag on your cushions. This tag will typically feature a cleaning code: 'W' for water-based cleaners, 'S' for solvent-based cleaners, 'W/S' for a combination of both, or 'X' which indicates vacuuming only.
Before any wet cleaning, thoroughly vacuum the cushions on all sides using an upholstery attachment. This removes loose dirt, dust, and debris, preventing it from turning into mud during the cleaning process.
If your cushion covers have a 'W' or 'W/S' code and are removable, you can typically machine wash them. It is advisable to zip the covers closed and wash all of them together to ensure the color remains consistent. Use a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent. Avoid using a machine dryer, as the heat can cause the fabric to shrink. Instead, air-dry the covers until they are just slightly damp. Putting the covers back on the foam inserts while they are still a bit damp helps them stretch for a proper fit.
For fabrics coded 'S', you must use a solvent-based upholstery cleaner. Always test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first to check for any discoloration. Apply the solvent with a clean cloth, blotting the stained area rather than rubbing it. Allow it to air-dry completely.
The cushion inserts themselves can also be cleaned. For foam inserts, you can spot clean stains using a mild solution of soap and water. Gently blot the area, then press out any excess moisture with a dry towel. It is critical to let the foam air-dry completely before reinserting it into the cover, as trapped moisture can lead to mold or mildew. Placing them in a sunny, well-ventilated area can help expedite drying and deodorize them.
