Hello there! Giving your sofa cushion foam a good clean is a great way to freshen up your entire couch. Don't worry, it's a totally manageable task.
First things first, after you've removed the foam from its cover, give it a thorough vacuuming on all sides. Use an upholstery attachment to get rid of any loose dust, pet hair, and crumbs that have settled into the foam over time. This step alone can make a big difference.
For light stains or a general refresh, spot cleaning is your best bet. You can create a simple cleaning solution by mixing a small amount of mild laundry detergent or dish soap with warm water. Lightly dampen a clean cloth with the solution, being careful not to soak it, and gently blot at any stained areas. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can damage the foam. After blotting the stain, use a separate cloth dampened with plain water to "rinse" the area, then press a dry towel firmly against the spot to absorb as much moisture as possible.
If the cushions need a deeper clean, you can wash them more thoroughly, but it requires patience during the drying phase. In a bathtub or a large basin, use the same mild soap and warm water solution. Submerge the foam and gently squeeze it to work the suds through. Drain the soapy water, refill with clean water, and continue squeezing the foam to rinse out all the soap. You may need to repeat the rinse cycle a few times.
The most crucial step is drying. Never put foam in a machine dryer, as the heat can damage it. Instead, gently squeeze out as much water as you can without wringing or twisting the foam. Then, stand the cushion on its edge in a well-ventilated area to air dry completely. You can place it outside on a sunny, breezy day or inside with a fan pointed at it to speed up the process. Make absolutely sure the foam is 100% dry all the way through before putting it back in its cover to prevent any mold or mildew from growing.
