To effectively remove ink stains from a leather sofa, it is crucial to act quickly and always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it does not damage the leather's finish.
The gentlest approach, and the best place to start, is with a simple solution of mild soap and warm water. Dampen a soft, white cloth with this soapy water, wring it out well, and gently blot or wipe the ink stain. Work in a soft, circular motion. Afterward, wipe the area with a new cloth dampened with only water to rinse away any soap residue, and then dry the spot thoroughly with a clean towel.
If the soap and water method is unsuccessful, you can proceed to use isopropyl alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol. For this method, dip a cotton swab or Q-tip into the alcohol and gently dab the ink stain. It is important to dab rather than rub, and to work from the outside edge of the stain inward to prevent it from spreading. Once the ink is lifted, wipe the area with a clean, damp cloth and dry it completely. Be aware that alcohol can dry out the leather and potentially strip its protective finish.
Regardless of the method used, the final and most critical step is to apply a quality leather conditioner to the cleaned area. Cleaning, especially with alcohol, removes the natural oils from the leather. A conditioner will restore moisture, prevent the leather from drying out and cracking, and help maintain its supple feel. For particularly stubborn stains, a specialized commercial leather ink remover may be necessary, but always follow the product's specific instructions.
