To effectively clean a sofa pillow, the first and most critical step is to check the care tag for specific instructions and cleaning codes. These codes, such as 'W' (water-based cleaner), 'S' (solvent-based cleaner), 'W/S' (either water or solvent-based), or 'X' (vacuum only), will dictate the appropriate cleaning method.
For pillows with removable covers, the process is straightforward. Typically, you can remove the cover and machine wash it according to the tag's directions, which often recommend a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. The cover can then be air-dried or tumble-dried on a low setting.
If the pillow does not have a removable cover, you have a few options depending on the level of cleaning required. For minor spills or stains, spot cleaning is recommended. First, gently scrape off any solid debris and blot liquids with a clean cloth. Then, using a white cloth dampened with the appropriate cleaning solution indicated by the care tag, work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent it from spreading. If water-based cleaning is permitted, you can blot the area with a cloth dampened with distilled water to rinse, then let it air dry completely.
For a deeper clean of a pillow without a removable cover, you may be able to wash the entire item. If the care tag indicates it is machine washable, place it in the washing machine on a gentle cycle with cold water and a small amount of mild detergent. It is often best to wash two pillows at once to keep the machine balanced. If machine washing is not advised, you can hand wash the pillow in a tub filled with cool water and gentle detergent. Submerge the pillow and gently squeeze it to work the soapy water through the filling. Rinse by squeezing it under clean water, then carefully press out as much excess water as possible without wringing.
To dry the pillow, you can let it air-dry flat, rotating it periodically. Alternatively, if permitted by the tag, place it in a dryer on a low or no-heat setting. Adding a few wool dryer balls or clean tennis balls to the dryer can help break up any clumps in the filling and restore the pillow's fluffiness.
