Ah, the humble "nip." It sounds like something a feisty kitten might do, but in the world of spirits, it's a very specific measurement, and a lot more fun.
According to our friends in New Zealand, a standard nip isn't just some vague "small amount" of a strong alcoholic drink. It is, with scientific precision, exactly 15 milliliters of alcohol. This measurement comes from those little metal or plastic spouts you might see on the top of a spirit bottle at a bar, which are designed to dole out a perfect 15mL pour every time.
Funnily enough, the article also points out that in New Zealand, if you order a standard spirit and mixer, you're likely getting a "double" unless you're told otherwise. That means your drink contains two nips, for a grand total of 30mL of spirit. So, while a single nip is 15mL, your standard drink might be twice the fun.
