The value of a 1972 Eisenhower dollar depends primarily on its metallic composition, its mint of origin, and its physical condition or grade. There are two distinct versions of the coin from that year: the standard copper-nickel clad issue and a 40% silver version made for collectors.
The most common 1972 Eisenhower dollars are the clad versions produced for general circulation by the Philadelphia Mint (which has no mint mark) and the Denver Mint (with a "D" mint mark). Combined, over 168 million of these coins were struck, making them very common. If you find one of these in your pocket change, it is almost certainly a clad coin in circulated condition, which is worth only its face value of one dollar. Uncirculated examples that have been preserved in their original mint luster are worth more to collectors, typically a few dollars. However, the value increases significantly for coins in exceptionally high grades. A professionally graded MS-65 example might be worth around $38, while top-tier specimens can be valued in the hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
It is also important for collectors to be aware of three rare die varieties of the 1972 Philadelphia issue, known as Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3. These are distinguished by the details of the Earth on the reverse of the coin. The Type 2 variety is the rarest and most valuable of the three, commanding a significant premium, often reaching thousands of dollars depending on its condition.
The San Francisco Mint also produced 1972 Eisenhower dollars, but these were made with a 40% silver composition and were intended for the collector market, not for circulation. These coins are identifiable by the "S" mint mark. They were sold in two formats: an uncirculated version in a blue envelope (a "Blue Ike") and a proof version with a mirror-like finish in a brown box (a "Brown Ike"). Due to their silver content, these coins have a base melt value that fluctuates but is typically between $6 and $10. As collector's items, they generally sell for a premium above their melt value, often in the $10 to $16 range for typical examples.
