Addressing saggy sofa cushions is a common issue that can often be resolved with a few targeted methods. The best approach depends on whether the problem lies within the cushions themselves or with the underlying support structure of the sofa.
One of the most direct and simplest solutions is to add support underneath the cushions. This can be achieved using commercially available cushion support inserts, which are typically firm, foldable panels that you place directly on the sofa frame beneath the cushions. These inserts provide a solid base, preventing the cushions from sinking into a worn-out spring system. A common do-it-yourself alternative is to have a piece of thin plywood or hardboard cut to fit the dimensions of the seating area and place it under the cushions for similar reinforcement.
If the sofa's frame and springs are in good condition, the issue likely resides with the cushion filling. Over time, the foam or fiberfill inside compresses and loses its loft. To fix this, you can add new material. If your cushion covers have zippers, open them to inspect the filling. For loose-fill cushions, simply add more polyester fiberfill to plump them back up. If the cushion has a foam core, you can wrap it with layers of high-loft quilt batting until you achieve the desired firmness and shape before reinserting it into the cover.
For a more permanent and effective restoration, you may consider completely replacing the foam insert inside each cushion. You can purchase high-density foam from a fabric or upholstery store, cut it to the exact size of your old insert, and replace it. This method provides a significant and lasting improvement to both the comfort and appearance of your sofa. By first identifying the source of the sag, you can choose the most appropriate and effective solution.
