While theoretically a slipcover can be made for nearly any couch, the feasibility and outcome depend heavily on whether a ready-made or custom solution is sought. The availability of custom slipcover services for a wide variety of furniture, including standard sofas, sectionals, and armless pieces, suggests that a tailored cover can be fabricated to fit the unique dimensions and shape of almost any couch.
The primary distinction lies between standardized, mass-produced slipcovers and custom-made ones. Ready-made slipcovers are designed to fit common sofa silhouettes and sizes. Consequently, they may not properly fit couches with unconventional shapes, unusual dimensions, or distinct features like winged backs or oversized arms. For these non-standard pieces, a one-size-fits-all approach is often inadequate.
Conversely, a custom slipcover is created based on the specific measurements of an individual piece of furniture, allowing for a precise and tailored fit. This approach makes it possible to cover a much broader range of sofa designs. However, certain couch characteristics can still present challenges. Sofas with extensive wooden or metal framework, deeply tufted upholstery, or permanently attached back and seat cushions may be difficult to cover effectively, as a slipcover could obscure defining design elements or fail to conform smoothly to the complex contours. Therefore, while a slipcover can be manufactured for almost any couch, the suitability and aesthetic success depend on the couch's specific design and the type of slipcover chosen.
