The production of the Silver Dollar can be understood in two distinct phases: its original historical run and its modern commemorative revival. The original Morgan Dollar was a United States dollar coin minted for circulation from 1878 to 1904, with a final issuance in 1921. For seventy years after 1921, the coin was no longer produced by the United States Mint.
In recent years, however, the United States Mint has resumed striking coins bearing the classic Morgan Dollar design, though not for general circulation. These modern issues are numismatic products created for collectors. For example, the U.S. Mint released a 2023 Morgan and Peace Dollar Reverse Proof Two-Coin Set, demonstrating an ongoing program to honor the iconic coin.
Therefore, while the Morgan Silver Dollar as a standard circulation coin is no longer made, the United States Mint has revived its production in the form of modern collectible coins. These contemporary releases celebrate the original design and are struck with modern minting techniques and finishes specifically for the numismatic market, rather than for use in daily commerce.
