Starting in the 1830s, U.S. states began granting women the right to own property. Mississippi’s 1839 law allowed married women to hold property with their husband’s permission. By 1900, all states had passed legislation, following New York’s 1848 Married Women’s Property Act, giving married women control over property and earnings.
