The first step to getting a VA primary care provider is enrolling in VA health care. Veterans can apply online, by mail, by , or in person at a VA medical center. Once eligibility is confirmed, the VA assigns a primary care provider based on your location, clinic availability, and medical needs to ensure consistent ongoing care.

After enrollment, veterans can obtain a primary care provider by contacting their local VA medical center or outpatient clinic. Staff will schedule an initial appointment and assign a provider within a Patient Aligned Care Team. If needed, veterans may later request a provider change based on availability or personal preference.

If a VA facility is too far away or cannot provide timely primary care, veterans may qualify for a provider through the VA Community Care program. With VA approval, care can be received from an authorized non-VA doctor while remaining covered by VA benefits, helping ensure access to primary care closer to home.
