To buy property in Mexico as a US citizen, you must first understand that ownership of land in the "restricted zone" (within 50 km of a coast or 100 km of a border) requires a bank trust, or fideicomiso, while areas outside this zone allow direct ownership. Regardless of location, the process involves hiring a real estate agent and a lawyer, signing a contract with a notario público, and registering the property. You will also need a Mexican tax ID (RFC) and a good understanding of associated fees and local laws.
