In the United States, inheriting property does not immediately trigger a capital gains tax. Instead, the tax only applies if you sell the inherited property for more than its fair market value at the time you received it. This value adjustment, known as the “stepped-up basis,” helps reduce the taxable gain by aligning the property’s cost basis with its market value upon inheritance.
