Generally, you can only use deadly force to protect property in your home, as per the castle doctrine, and only if you reasonably believe the intruder poses a threat of serious injury or death. Outside of your home, the use of deadly force to protect property is rarely justified and is often illegal. The force used must be proportional to the threat, and even within a home, you can't use deadly force against a fleeing intruder.
