When you leave a job, you can leave your 401(k) with your old employer. You can choose between rolling it to a new plan or an IRA, or cashing it out (subject to taxes and a possible 10% early withdrawal penalty), but it's important to note that inactive small accounts (often below $7,000) risk forced cash-out, and though your personal contributions are secure, unvested employer funds are lost when you leave.
